Tawny WIlloughby comes from Alabama. She has always loved lounging in the sun. To make sure that she always has the same and even tan, she lays in her own tanning bed 4 to 5 times a week. But when she turns 21 she receives the shock of her life: she has skin cancer!
Since then, the 27-year-old has undergone innumerable treatments. She has had tumors destroyed with liquid nitrogen, removed with a burner, or irradiated. After her most recent procedure, the young mother decided to post this picture in order to serve as a warning to young sunbathers:
“If anyone needs a little bit of motivation NOT to lay in a tanning bed or in the sun - Please,” writes Tawny under the picture. “This is what a skin cancer treatment can look like. Use sunscreen and spray tan. You only have one skin in your life and you have to take care of it. Learn from the mistakes of others. Don’t let tanning keep you from seeing your kids grow up. That is my biggest fear with my 2-year-old!”
The shocking selfie was shared over 70,000 times. Mothers rallied to thank Tawny for the posting the disturbing picture, a picture which helped to bring their tanning-obsessed daughters to reason. Tawny hopes she can prevent others from experiencing what she has endured.
