Coconut water is a beverage that’s catching on in a big way, and for good reason. Coconut water is awesome for you. But we can take coconut water a step further in its health benefits by making a coconut water kefir.
This kefir beverage is basically fermented coconut water. It’s probiotic drink rich in vitamins, minerals, and electrolytes. Coconut water kefir is easier on the body too, since many people can’t handle dairy.
Coconut water kefir has, in some cases, helped end sugar cravings, clear up skin problems, and ease PMS. We know for sure that the drink aids digestion, strengthens the immune system, gives you a boost of energy, and can help spike your metabolism. Making it is easy too.
You can make coconut water kefir with an existing kefir as a starter, using a starter kefir culture, or using kefir grains. Aside from that, you will need:
  • 7 cups of fresh coconut water
  • 5 tablespoons of water kefir grains
  • 1 cinnamon stick
Instructions:
  1. Add the coconut water to a half gallon mason jar.
  2. Stir in the kefir grains and drop the cinnamon stick in.
  3. Place the lid loosely on the jar.
  4. Allow to sit for 48 hours.
Don’t let it sit for longer than 48 hours as you risk it fermenting too long and making the jar explode. That would be a serious bummer.
The coconut water, when ready, will become cloudy and a little bit lighter in color. The kefir grains will rise to the top when they’re done culturing. Simply strain the beverage and enjoy. The grains can be reused by storing them in a jar of water in the refrigerator.
Easy, delicious, and good for you!
