John and Lilly's wedding was filled with beautiful decorations and flowers. Both their families were there and it seemed like a fairy tale wedding. The sad truth is that Lilly is an 11-year-old girl, just one of 15 million underage girls who are married every year. The video below was developed in collaboration by Bridal Musings and UNICEF to show the horrific truth of child marriage. The girls are often treated as if they were inhuman. While this practice happens all over the world, together, we can stop it. We just need to spread the message.
“The sad truth is that a girl who is married as a child is more likely to be out of school, experience domestic violence, and become infected with HIV/AIDS. She is more likely to have children when she herself is still a child, and is far more likely to die due to complications during pregnancy and childbirth,” said a UNICEF spokesperson.
The video features a middle school-aged girl marrying a 35 year old man. Her family is a willing participant in this terrible spectacle.
