Nature has provided us with a healthier alternative to candies. Fruits are as sweet as candies, but their sweetness is not a result of artificial sugars and stuff. Apples, pears and other fruits are packed with vitamins and minerals.
The only thing that should worry you is the origin of the fruits you are buying. Unfortunately, fruits are usually covered with wax that is made from the same material that motor oils are derived from. Need more details? Yes, this wax is life-threatening and toxic to your body.
Fruit wax
Farmers and manufacturers have a nasty ritual of covering their fresh produce with wax so they can last for longer. This procedure includes a process in which fruit’s natural wax is removed, and then the product is coated with petroleum-based wax.
Although they say that this wax keeps fungus and bacteria away from the fruits, and preserves the produce, the truth is slightly different. ‘Slightly’ is probably too mild. Moreover, this wax also changes the color of the fruits, and makes them more appealing and tasty-looking. In the past decade, people have started wondering whether this method is really necessary or it is just a trick to make consumers buy more.
Fruit wax ingredients
Given that fruit wax has nothing to do with food, companies are not forced to reveal its content. Rumor has it that this wax contains toxic ingredients, and the controversy is still present. The only thing we know is that fruit wax contains allergens like soy, dairy, gluten and other the like.
Moreover, wax coatings are full of fungicides and preservatives, artificial dyes, and coloring that make the fruit look nice. These dyes are known carcinogens, and they are something you do not need on your food.
Avoid wax-covered fruits
Even though conventional fruit wax is made from ingredients that harm health, some companies cover their produce with wax made from natural ingredients. Look for these fruits, and you will never be at a risk of developing an ailment.
Organic fruit wax is made from ingredients like carnauba wax, wood resin, and beeswax. What is more important, it does not contain fungicides, artificial preservatives, or petroleum0based ingredients.
Make sure that the fruits you are buying does not contain any of these products or try to find fruits that have not been waxed. Look for fruits at farmer’s market. Always pick fruits that are in season, because they are never coated with wax.
