Hot dogs are one of the biggest cancer causing foods on the planet and are eaten by the vast majority of people, especially children, on a daily basis. They have been widely consumed mainly because of their taste, however, hot dogs are probably the most harmful of all junk foods.

What Do Hot Dogs Contain?

They are usually produced by chicken, beef, and pork meat, plus some animal remains, including skin, legs, claws, and fat. Furthermore, in order to be more tasteful and flavored, many additives are added, including monosodium glutamate, corn syrup, and salt. The source of carmine flavors and monosodium glutamate is obtained from the shells of tiny bugs boiled in ammonia and sodium carbonate.

How Do Hot Dogs Cause Cancer?

Unfortunately, all of these additives are not mentioned on the labels. Therefore, you cannot be really sure what you are consuming every time you eat a hot dog.
Preservatives called nitrites, found in hot dogs, are the main culprit why this food is cancer-causing. Nitrites merge with amines, which are natural ingredients of meat, and form carcinogenic nitrosamine compounds during the cooking process when heated at high temperatures.
The nitrosamine compounds are directly connected with oral cavity, bladder, stomach, esophagus, and brain cancer. Also, the chances of developing pancreatic cancer increase by 67%. The risk of other types of cancer also increases, including bowel and colorectal cancer when hot dogs are consumed daily.

What About the Vegetables that Contain Nitrites?

Namely, nitrites aren’t intrinsically harmful. They are naturally found in many green vegetables, especially in spinach, celery, and lettuce. Still, they are not harmful, but beneficial for our body and health, and also reduce the risk of cancer. These nitrites are the building block of nitric oxide, which is helpful for lowering high blood pressure and healing inflammations. However, the nitrites contained in hot dogs and other processed meats are synthetic and only serve to add the pink color.

What About the Other Meats?

Beef, lamb, and pork meat are all red meats, which can be healthy since they are a great source of proteins, vitamins, and minerals such as zinc and iron. Yet, their over-consumption directly leads to cancer, as well as the processed meat. If you eat 90g or more of these meats on a daily basis, you have a higher risk of developing cancer. Therefore, try to reduce the amount of red and processed meat so that you can decrease the risk of cancer.
There are also other changes that you can make in order to reduce cancer risk, such as:
  • Maintaining a healthy weight
  • Be physically more active
  • Quit smoking
